Make beans rock

Please do not tune out if you have a child who you think will never eat beans no matter what 😊

I did some experimenting with kidney beans to make them more appealing for children in general, not just fussy eaters.

I think I’ve hit upon something that works from both a texture and a flavour angle.

You know you want to read on … particularly as meat is so expensive now and beans are a) relatively cheap and b) full of vitamins and nutrients.

Check out what I did to make beans rock

This is not a recipe per se as you can adapt this to fit your circumstances:

Many children are happy eating a bolognaise sauce or mince for nachos. That’s what I did, I used kidney beans and added them to the nacho mince.

Not one of my ‘boys’ noticed they had been added. I am absolutely not a fan of hiding, but I did want to see if they realised the beans were in the weekly mince as that was an important part of checking that it didn’t markedly change the taste or the texture.

Win. No one noticed and all of them ate the bean/mince mix firstly with corn chips and then a second time in burritos.

I took kidney beans and blended them in the food processor and then cooked them through the mince sauce. It thickened the sauce a little and that’s about it.

Perfect if you would love to boost the nutrients your child ingests each week.

Great for economising on meat and super quick and easy to do.

Beans also count as one of your 5 A Day 😊

Any mild flavour bean like cannellini would also work.

My advice is to add a small amount first and see how you go.

If you have a non-mince eater I will be looking for other ways where we could make beans rock. Watch this space …
