Artisan bread (no knead)
I love making bread, but I don’t have a lot of time for kneading which is why I often make things like soda bread that don’t ‘need’ it 😉
I have been looking at no-knead loaves for ages and finally made one.
It’s a great recipe to make with the children as it’s simple and gives you all those fab science lessons about rising/baking etc.
Older children could do this themselves.
It can be sliced so easy for lunches or toast (you could make rectangular loaves if you prefer that shape).
Recipe – Artisan bread
1 ½ cups flour (I used wholemeal)
½ tsp salt
1 tsp yeast (use instant or regular)
½ tsp sugar (I used coconut sugar)
¾ cup warm water
Method
Add sugar and yeast to the warm water. Allow to froth (approx. 5 mins)
Mix flour and salt in a bowl
Once the yeast starts to activate, add to the flour
Stir with a spoon to form a sticky dough
Cover bowl with plastic and allow to rise for 3 hours
After 2 ¼ hours heat oven to 230°
Place a dutch oven or heavy pot with lid inside the oven and allow to heat for 30 mins
Place dough on a piece of baking paper and form into a ball
Place dough inside the dutch oven, put the lid on and bake for 25 mins
Take the lid off and bake for a further 5-10 mins until bread is brown on top and bottom
Allow to cool slightly on a rack before slicing
